Randy Pausch on Achieving Childhood Dreams

Here's a great talk by Randy Pausch, a CMU professor, on how he's achieved his childhood dreams. Randy did a neat project at UVA in the early '90s called VR on $5 a day, where he built a cheap but functional VR system for under $5000 ($5 a day for a 3 year lifetime). He's a great speaker and I heard him give a talk on the project when I was an undergrad. It made me apply to UVA for grad school, and although I was accepted they didn't offer me funding so I went somewhere that did.

Here's some more information on Randy. I found the talk from Kirby Urner.

John Vanderslice and Bishop Allen concert

I saw John Vanderslice and Bishop Allen at the Rock n Roll Hotel in DC on Saturday. It was a really good show, both bands were excellent. The concert was actually webcast on NPR, the link is to their page for the streaming archive on their website. Unfortunately it seems like they missed Vanderslice's opening song Kookaburra. Update 9/28: The stream now includes the first two songs and they've added some interviews with the bands as well!

The NPR Live Concert Series looks like it has a lot of great stuff in it. Next week they'll be webcasting Okkervil River at the Hotel Rock n Roll, I've heard they put on a great show and I'll definitely be tuning in.
